Being so far away from family has made life pretty boring for me, to tell you the truth. I was used to going to one of my sister’s houses jus about every night for dinner and since I took this new job I don’t have much to do at night so I spend a lot of time online or watching my http://www.direc4u.com/il/p/peoria/ channels. I’m actually really into sports right now since I’ve always been a tomboy and football is really big here which is nice. I love being in the know when it comes to my favorite teams. I think it makes me a better single woman since men like it when women like sports and can watch with them and I not only like sports, I love them! I think it’s so much fun to get behind a team and cheer them on. I really miss my family but sometimes I have to remember that I needed to get out on my own and start something new. That’s the place I’m in right now.

I just cannot believe that it is 2012. I had a great time with family bringing in the new year. It was so fun watching all the little cousins play hard all night long, it was a treat for them to stay up way past their bedtimes. I hope this is a tradition that is in the making, being with family and having the little ones hang out, having a blast at grandma's. Those are some of the fond memories I have of growning up, being at my grandma's and celebrating with all my cousins which I didn't get to see often.

I was really glad that we had decided to get home security this summer when I got a call from our service provider when we were relaxing at the beach. The alarm had detected activity and no one was answering the phone. The alarm system provider immediately called the police and had them go to our home. It turns out that there was a big storm while we were gone. The whole week was going to be filled with bad and nasty weather back home. A tree branch had been struck by lightening and fallen smack dab through our bay window in the living room in the back of the house. It immediately set off our glass break alarm and alerted the security system and the police. Because we have a high fence in our back yard, if we hadn’t had a security system, the burst window could have sat there the entire week. The rain and other debris would have gotten in the house and ruined everything in the living room. While I was really glad that someone wasn’t breaking into the house, I was even more glad that we found out about the window and fixed it before more damage could be done!

Last Football Game Of The Season

Tonight is my son's last JV Football game of the season. Tonight they head over to Clarion and I hope the come home with a victory. This season has not been a winning season for the JV team, which is very unfortunate as the varsity team is finally having a great year. I home Cole is able to have a great game and scores at least one touchdown. He is a wide receiver, he plays Y, whatever that means. It seems he is thrown to more the end of the game or when they are in a crunch. Go Indians.

There's nothing quite like seeing a Broadway show, or at least that's my opinion. I really love seeing them each and every time I go. That's only about four Broadway shows now but I never seem to grow tired of them. There's a really great reason why they're so popular. I went and saw Memphis last time we went to New York and I heard they filmed a live performance and released it as a DVD, so I wanted to track it down and watch it again.

While I was looking online to try and find it, I saw a site where you can compare hearing aids. I've thought about getting some for a while now, so that helped me figure out which ones I actually need.

I found a really great Memphis show review, which I completely agreed with, and then I finally found a place where I could rent the DVD. It was so great to watch it again. It was almost like we were there watching it again. It was the next best thing to actually sitting in the audience.

iPhone or Droid

It's time for me to consider a new cell phone, as mine is not working very well. My brother owns a Droid and absolutely loves it. He likes that it has an actual keyboard, not just a touch screen. Being on the Internet is easy and he has no problems connecting. My sister has the iPhone and she also loves her phone. She loves that it is just a touch screen, iPod, and the Internet also. It seems to me that they both have wonderful options and I just need to decided and make my purchase. Too bad both phones cannot be combined into just one, the best of both.

It seems that when we need to take a medication for health issues it almost becomes a toss up as to wether we should really take those medications because of the serious side effects. One such instance is the drug Actos, which is prescribed for those with Type II Diabetes. The side effects range for heart attacks, heart failure, and bladder cancer. This makes me very sad as that there are many people that suffer from Diabetes, including my own mom, who are now at risk for something maybe even worse that what they are being treated for. Football Season

Football season is upon us. For those of us that love the sport whether it is the NFL, college, or high school the season is upon us. Three days of football, my husband is going to be in heaven. There is Friday night when our son will be playing, Saturdays when there is college ball and he can watch the Iowa Hawkeyes, and then there is Sunday watching the Minnesota Vikings. I am excited to watch Cole on Friday nights but that is about the extent of my enthusiasm. Looks like John is going to be or not be doing much for the next three months.

I have decided that I am tired of being the only person in our home that does all of the household chores. It seems like I just get the laundry done and someone comes home and the basket is filled up again. Or those of us that are home at supper just get things cleaned up and others come home, eat, and leave their mess for me to clean up. Shoes, that is another thing that I just don't understand. Why is it so difficult to take shoes off right when one comes in the house instead of leaving them all over the house. I am dreading hunting season, which is right around the corner, as they will be so much crap laying around the house.

Summer's Almost Over

It's official, the end of summer has almost arrived and with that it's time for school to start. It seems so unfair that the summer months have to go by so fast and the winter ones seem to stay around forever. The end of summer not only brings the start of school, but also football and volleyball. Soon things will go from green to brown and the temperatures are going to start dropping way to fast. The only good thing about summer coming to an end is that it is that much closer to it starting all over again.

On Thursday nights, the http://www.expertsatellite.com are taken advantage of in our house is tuned into one of the best Prime Time Competition Shows around: Survivor. This is really the show that started it all so many years ago. Of course, the contestants get dropped off in the middle of nowhere and are left to fend for themselves. While a basic food, like rice, is usually given to the contestants, who are usually split into two teams called tribes, they have to find their own steady supply of food. Plus, they must make their own fire and usually have to boil water before drinking it. The conditions the players must endure are usually very difficult.

But what makes Survivor such a great show is the challenges. The reward challenges are usually for some great food or sight seeing experience and the immunity challenges are for staying safe from being voted off the show, but just the activities the folks have to do is what really separates Survivor from the average competition show. Sometimes the challenges reward physically strong competitors, sometimes the fastest, but sometimes the smartest and most clever rise to the top. Survivor is one of those games that requires several different qualities from the players, but the really trick is to pull the whole thing off while you are starving. This is just a great show to check out, and a lot of fun to see what creative games the folks come up with.

Today in Iowa we are in a warning for an extreme heat advisory. We are suppose to have a heat index of around 105 - 110 degrees. I am ready for summer and warm temperatures to begin, however, I am not sure I want it to be that hot. Not only are the temps going to extreme, I think we are suppose to have some very high humidity. If thats the case I had better finally turn on the A/C, especially if I don't want Alli to be crabby. She does not like the humidity.

Sunshine

Seasame Street

My three year old daughter Dru is watching Seasame Street this morning. She usually doesn't watch this program, however, today she seems to be enjoying it. This program sure has changed since I watched it as a kid. For one thing we didn't have Elmo's World, which is what is on right now. It is kinda of annoying the way Elmo talks in the third person all the time. Elmo does provide good learning though. Another change since my childhood would have to be Abby's Flying Fairy School. Dru also seems to enjoy Abby and her school gang. They always manage to get into some type of trouble, but they always seem to find a solution to help get themselves out of it, teaching a lession to the viewers.

Summer Is Here

The summer holiday season is finally upon us, and with that comes a new set of rules for the house. For some reason when there is no school my children think they can stay up as late as they want, do what ever they want, and stay out as late as they want. My son's favorite quote so far this summer has been "what else is summer for if I can't hang out with my friends and as late as I want". I guess he doesn't understand that he is a part of a family that does have rules, but when your 16 you always think you know it all. I guess he is in for a surprise when he has to hang with his parents and sisters.

Softball

Tonight Becca has her second softball game of her fifth grade season. They will play a doubleheader and she is so excited. Becca is hoping to play shortstop or secondbase. These are the positions she played last Friday night when it was so beastly hot outside. Tonight is the exact opposite, it is so cold we will be wearing jeans, sweatshirt, and snuggling in a blanket. Last week Becca never got a hit. I hope tonight she is more confident and will take the ball for a great ride.

Crazy Weather

Wow, this week has had some really crazy weather. The weekend and beginning of this week started off with record high temperatures. Over 100 degrees in some area's along with very high wind speeds. Now today it is very cold. Jeans and sweatshirts are definitely needed. I just don't understand why we cannot have a happy medium. Tonight we will be going to Becca's softball game and we will probably need blankets to help us keep warm. Crazy.

These days there alot of reality and competion shows that are on prime time television. I have been a huge fan of these types of programs for a while now and I love to watch them because they keep you on the edge of your seat. There is no better feeling than turning on my satellite television from www.directstartv.com and watching a competition show in high definition. This leads to my favorite prime time competition show and that is NBC's Minute To Win It.

Now, the first time that I seen chef Guy Fieri on his Food Network show, he came across to me as a cook that was made for television. Well, Guy Fieri is a good game show host and it is so very evident with Minute To Win It. The games that the people have to play in this show are so innovative that you sit there and wonder just who in the world had the mind and innovation to come up with them. The thrill of the show though is watching the people compete and try to finish their assigned tasks in the minute time frame. Another good thing about the show is the large amounts of money that they compete for and the excitement when they are able to win.

Minute to Win It is definitely my favorite prime time competition show on satellite television.

Confirmation Sunday

This Sunday, May 1, 2011 is the day my daughter Alli will be confirmed. We are so blessed that this event will be happening for her. Alli is Autistic, non-verbal, and socially not age appropriate. The other children getting confirmed have been very gracious to accept her disabiliies and have included her as much as they can. My husband and I are also very fortunate to have Sandy in Alli's life. She is a very special lady who has worked with Alli every Wednesday so that she can get confirmed and truely learn about our Lord and Savior. Thank You so much Sandy for ALL you have done for Alli!

It's always a lot of fun to watch the NBA games on TV. Someday I hope to get to a NBA game. I live only a few hours from Minneapolis/St. Paul area, so going to see the Minnesota Timberwolves is actually something that could happen. With all that has happen in recent months with players leaving teams to join another team I have become more familiar with teams such as the Miami Heat and http://www.ticketamerica.com/orlando_magic_tickets.html.

I am a product of growing up in the 80's and back in my day the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan was the team to watch, unfortunately I have not watched them lately and don't know if they are still the "A" List team. Another team to watch back in my day were the Utah Jazz, according to my husband, who is a huge basketball fan. I really should take the time to watch both teams and see how they are today.

Dieting

It really sucks to always be on a diet. I've tried many different things to lose weight, however it seems no matter how hard I try when I get to a certain weight I'm stuck and can no longer lose anymore. I've tried Weight Watchers, Atkins, and exercise and nothing really seems to help. I am now trying the HCG diet. This is suppose to trick your body into thinking you are pregnant so it burns more calories. You are also suppose to stick to a 500 calorie diet. Yeah right.

Kitchen Remodel

My husband John and I decided that our kitchen needed a serious remodel. We wanted to give it a face lift without spending a lot of money. One of biggest sore spots were the cabinets. They were an awful dark stained color with lots of scratches and colored pictures from our son. At one point he was going through a stage of writing his name in black marker on anything and everything he could. Enough about that. So we decided that we wanted to go with a distressed, old farm house look. I painted the cabinets a sage green and then scuffed them up with sand paper. I then applied a black glazed based paint to them to help them look dirty and distressed. They turned out pretty cool. It's amazing what a little bit of paint can do to help a room be transformed.

Living in rural Iowa means that your drinking and cooking water comes straight from the well. Some people really like to drink old fashioned well water, however, I am not one of those people. I have been seriously looking for a countertop water filter, something that would make my drinking water taste better. Mud Every Where

Mud is one of the things I dislike the most. About the only positive thing that mud brings is that Spring Time is close or already here. Things are starting to thaw and with that it brings a very messy driveway for me. Not only do all of our vehicles get very dirty, but the boys seem to bring it into the house. I really don't want too many windy days, however, wind brings drying out of the mud. This always puts a big smile on my face.

Being a San Antonio Spurs fan used to be the coolest thing in the world. I grew up in San Antonio and I still live there, so being cool was easy. What made it great during all those championship years was that I was in high school at the time. We would all get together and watch the games. It was a reason to hang out, and the results of the game almost always put us in a good mood. I have more responsibilities today. For instance, instead of sneaking out the back door to see a game, I now make sure to set my home security alarm Baltimore ADT Home security deals prior to leaving. Different world. But, it's not a completely different world. That's because the Spurs seem to have one last run in their tank. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and company, are going to town on the rest of the NBA. They even won their first 7 road games, which is very difficult to do in the NBA. It seems as though a rivalry is forming with the Jazz, but that's not the team I'm worried about. Even the Mavericks don't scare me too much. I think we're about even with them. The team that scares me the most is the Lakers - of course. We all know Kobe wants ring #6, but how cool would it be if we stopped him? That would put this Spurs team at legendary status. Hey, crazier things have happened.

Rival Basketball Game

I am really excited for tonights high school girls basketball game. Tonight the two top teams of the conference are playing against each other. Both of their records for conference play are 5-0, this should make for a very exciting game. Usually our girls basketball team is not very good, sorry to say, however this year is an exception. How fun would it be if they could continue their winning record tonight. Go Indians.

Athletic Shoes

Recently I have tried to start a healthier lifestyle. I have done this by trying to change my eating habits and also by making sure I get in some type of exercise everyday. This past summer I did a lot of walking and running outside. The scenic view was great as we live very close to a golf course, which is very pretty. It gives me some interesting people to look at as I walk or run by.

Because I live in Iowa, I cannot exercise outside as our winters can be very harsh. Using the elliptical at the local YMCA has been my choice of exercise recently. Unfortunately this past fall I injuried my new so running does not come as easily for me. The elliptical seems to be very gentle on my knees and still lets me have an excercise program. I have also learned that good athletic shoes are a must not matter what type of excercise I am doing

Blizzard

We here in Iowa are offically in the middle of the first blizzard of the winter season. I was hoping the weathermen's reports were wrong, as they were last weekend, however it has happened and we are stranded at home. It started with rain last night, turning over to snow around 9:30 this morning. Since then it has snowed constantly, major drifting, no visability, and the wind just continues to howl. They say the winds are 30 - 40 mph with gusts of around 50. Not a good situation with little snow let alone 6 - 12 inches that has been predictied for our area. I guess we'll just stay in and bake some Christmas cookies.

Swim Team

Becca has joined our local YMCA's winter swim team. She was not very excited to do this, however, her dad and I thought it would be a good idea. Last weekend she had her very first meet and she did a really awesome job. She got third place in the backstroke and second for her team. She has been trying really hard and I think as much as she doesn't want to admit it, she loves swim team. She has another meet tomorrow and I am very excited to see how much Becca will improve her times, especially now that she knows what to expect.

Recently my husband John decided to start up with a new hobby, or should I say an old hobby from high school that he has now resumed. This new hobby is trapping. John is a huge outdoorsmen and this is just another thing to add to his list. He has been trapping for about two weeks now and all I have to say is that it seems to be very time consuming. He leaves each morning to check traps, which leaves me to getting our four children ready for school. He is gone in the evening checking traps and than skinning anything that was caught. John seems to be really excited about this new venture, however, I am not.

Thanksgiving Turkey

This year for our family Thanksgiving my sister and I are in charge. How scary is that. I am not quite sure how things are going to turn out. I have been put in charge of the turkey and stuffing. As I have never made homemade stuffing before I will be using a few boxes of Stove Top Stuffing. I think that should suffice and make most people happy. The trick this year will be in making the turkey. I have made only one other turkey in my lifetime, and I am not exactly sure on how to prepare it. My mom says to just throw it in a brown paper bag with some flour and it will turn out fine. I have doubts, I think I will look through some cookbooks and see if anyone can give me some better suggestions. I am sure everything will turn out fine and everyone will be happy with their dinner.

The Cat In The Hat

Here we go, go, go on an adventure. . . . go, go, go, goooo. Two of my daughters are addicted to the new PBS show The Cat In The Hat. As an adult I really don't see what is so great about this TV program, but it seems to keep Alli and Dru entertained and contained :). I do have to say the adventures they go on are interesting and informative, however not enough to keep my attention. The jingle for the song can be quite annoying as well. Oh well, at least it's not a continuous night of Scooby Doo and Curious George.

This past Sunday, my niece Clara Rae, was baptised. Baptism is always such a special occassion, all children are special gifts from God. The service was extra special, as it is always so neat to see little ones baptised. The gathering after the baptism was fun also. Tonight at our local YMCA I was disappointed to see how busy the weight room was. Not only does it make it unenjoyable to workout with all the people, but it is hard to get on a machine. What made me the most upset was most of the people in the weight room were from our local college. I don't understand why the college cannot provide a facility for their students to workout at. It is very hard to share the very small weight room our YMCA offers with both the general public and the college kids.

Sadness At A Local Communtiy

This past week has been a very sad one for a local community. Last weekend they expectantly lost a 16 year old boy. He left home to walk to the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread for a sick neighbor. He did not return home, on the way he collapsed and died later that day. His family and friends are still waiting to hear the autopsy reports, but they are wondering if it wasn't his heart, even though he had no symptoms.

After his funeral later on in the week three of his classmates were involved in an auto accident due to the very high winds that our area has been experencing. They were pushed off the road, hit a tree, slid down the embankment, and landed in the river. One of the teenagers was able to escape, however, the other two boys were trapped in the car. I read in the paper this morning one of those boys has now passed away also. How sad. The paper has not released how the other boy is doing. I can only hope that he will be okay amist all this tragedy.

It's that time of year again, it's the time to start doing some in depth fall cleaning. Getting rid of all the dust bunnies that have accumulated under furniture, the spider webs that just seem to appear out of no where, and just organizing all the winter clothing. I cannot believe what a job it can be and I sometimes wonder how things can get so dirty. At least when the cleaning is done I feel good about how the house looks, I just hope the kids will let me have it picked up, if even for a weekend.

Last night was Cole's last football game of the season. They finished with a winning record, they did very well. Cole should be very proud of himself as he played really great this season. Last night he had such a good hit on his guy that I thought he was going to carry him across the field and down to the goal line. It's really too bad that the varsity squad didn't have as good of a season, however the JV squad will be varsity next year and will hopefull dominate. :)

It is so much fun to watch Dru play with her dolls. She is such a little mother hen. It just amazes me how much little children watch their mom's and dad's and follow in their footsteps. My question to all is, do all 15 year old boys come with such attitudes. I have a feeling that the "I know it all attitude" is not just Coles but a majority of the teenage population. Being a mother of four children I think I am in for a long journey. Why is it that they always have to learn their lessons the hard way instead of listening to their parents who have probably made similar mistakes. This past week my family and I have been dog sitting Sam Henry. Sam Henry is my parents dog. It's not that he is a bad dog, he is just not used to a lot of activity, especially with my four children. By the end of the day he is just plain ready for bed. Right now he is hiding behind the couch, hoping Dru will not find him. All Dru wants to do is love him up, however all Sam wants is to be left alone. I think he will be very happy to go home tomorrow and Dru will be very sad to see him go.

One day last week my son had blisters forming on his neck. When I asked him what they were he couldn't give me an answer. After a couple days and no improvement in the rash/blisters on his neck we decided to take him to the doctor. At this appointment it was diagnosed that he had shingles. How odd for a 15 year old to have a break out of this. This is very contagious to those who have not had the chicken pox. Why does this matter to us you may ask? Well as it turns out we have a two year old daughter who has not had chicken pox yet. (we do not vaccinate) So I guess we will see in a couple of weeks if she will get the chicken pox for Cole who has Shingles.

My idea of fun in a casino is playing the slot machines, these I totally understand.

A few years back I was lucky enough to visit Las Vegas and had a lot of fun visiting all the different casinos this fabulous city has to offer. My daughter Alli came home from school very tired today. I believe it is a combination of the very hot and humid weather and how busy they keep her. Alli is 13 and has been diagnosed with Autism. She loves to go to school every day and loves seeing all her friends. About two hours ago she fell asleep on the living room floor and is still laying there sleeping. My daughter Dru has been potty trained since she was 18 months old. i guess I should say she is potty trained during the day, however night time is a hole other story. I still put diapers on her at night because she still wets the bed. I have tried to restrict how much she drinks at night, this seems to be working except for last night. In just a little while it will be time to freeze the sweet corn that it is piled high on my deck. Last night, in the hot and humid weather, my husband was nice enough to pick a large load of sweet corn. My Uncle Alan was nice enough to give me a very easy recipe, which does not include boiling the corn or blanching it. The more simple the better for me. The recipe is to cut the corn off the cob, enough to fill a 9 x 13 pan, add 1/3 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp salt, 2 cups water, and 5 ice cubs.

Tonight Cole is again at football. I feel bad for him and his teammates as the weather is so hot and humid. I am very surprised that no one has suffered from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. This summer has been very humid and I am ready for the cooler temperatures, but not winter. I wonder how tired and how hungary he is going to be when he gets home.

Looking outside I am trying to decide if the weather is going to change from sunny skys to stormy. It just came across the TV that we are under a tornado watch until 8:00 tonight. This will put a major wrench in my plans for tonight. First of all I was hoping to get a two mile walk in and we need to start freezing sweet corn. I hope the rain and storms stay away tonight.

Boating

Cole just left a little while ago to go boating with his friends. On a night like tonight it will feel good to get in the water. It has been very humid all day and the water is going to feel great. When I asked Cole why they were going so late I was told that there was no wind so it was a good night to use the wafe board. I sure hope he stays safe and has a really good time with Dylan, Peyton, and Dale. I'm sure some girl watching is also going to be involved in tonights boat ride.

Dog Sitting

For the past eight days my family and I have been dog sitting for my parents, who have been vacationing in Canada. I sure hope they have had a good time and are looking forward to getting home to their precious Sam Henry. Dog sitting Sam is not a bad thing, however, he is one dog who is set in his ways. I can tell he is missing mom and dad. I think our houseful of kids, the noise, and the business of this household is definitely not for this dog. I can tell you right now that I will not miss all the hair that he sheads, especially in this heat and humidity. I think all parties involved are looking forward to things getting back to normal.

Friday Nights

I, like most people I know, look forward to friday nights. Not only does it mean the weekend has finally arrived, but it is also the end of the work week. When friday night finally arrives, I envision in my mind a quiet peaceful night in which I can relax and enjoy the night, however tonight Becca is having a friend over to play and they are so not following the rules. I don not like ball throwing in the house, mouthing off, or making a large mess. I can honestly say that all of these have occurd tonight. So needless to say, I am not and will not get my quiet friday night.

Basketball Camp

Wow, I can't believe that summer is almost coming to a close and that school will be starting soon. However, before we can start football and school it is time for Waldorf's Basketball camp. Cole will start open gym tonight to help him prepare for his first basketball camp as a high school basketball player. I am so excited for him, after all, this is what all the work as a young child has been for, right? The opportunity to play the sports you love at the varsity or JV level, depending on age and ability. I am hoping he will look beyond all the hard work and enjoy playing the game with all his friends and the excitment of the crowd cheering them all on.
