Athletic Shoes

Recently I have tried to start a healthier lifestyle. I have done this by trying to change my eating habits and also by making sure I get in some type of exercise everyday. This past summer I did a lot of walking and running outside. The scenic view was great as we live very close to a golf course, which is very pretty. It gives me some interesting people to look at as I walk or run by.

Because I live in Iowa, I cannot exercise outside as our winters can be very harsh. Using the elliptical at the local YMCA has been my choice of exercise recently. Unfortunately this past fall I injuried my new so running does not come as easily for me. The elliptical seems to be very gentle on my knees and still lets me have an excercise program. I have also learned that good athletic shoes are a must not matter what type of excercise I am doing

Blizzard

We here in Iowa are offically in the middle of the first blizzard of the winter season. I was hoping the weathermen's reports were wrong, as they were last weekend, however it has happened and we are stranded at home. It started with rain last night, turning over to snow around 9:30 this morning. Since then it has snowed constantly, major drifting, no visability, and the wind just continues to howl. They say the winds are 30 - 40 mph with gusts of around 50. Not a good situation with little snow let alone 6 - 12 inches that has been predictied for our area. I guess we'll just stay in and bake some Christmas cookies.

Swim Team

Becca has joined our local YMCA's winter swim team. She was not very excited to do this, however, her dad and I thought it would be a good idea. Last weekend she had her very first meet and she did a really awesome job. She got third place in the backstroke and second for her team. She has been trying really hard and I think as much as she doesn't want to admit it, she loves swim team. She has another meet tomorrow and I am very excited to see how much Becca will improve her times, especially now that she knows what to expect.

Trapping

Recently my husband John decided to start up with a new hobby, or should I say an old hobby from high school that he has now resumed. This new hobby is trapping. John is a huge outdoorsmen and this is just another thing to add to his list. He has been trapping for about two weeks now and all I have to say is that it seems to be very time consuming. He leaves each morning to check traps, which leaves me to getting our four children ready for school. He is gone in the evening checking traps and than skinning anything that was caught. John seems to be really excited about this new venture, however, I am not.

Thanksgiving Turkey

This year for our family Thanksgiving my sister and I are in charge. How scary is that. I am not quite sure how things are going to turn out. I have been put in charge of the turkey and stuffing. As I have never made homemade stuffing before I will be using a few boxes of Stove Top Stuffing. I think that should suffice and make most people happy. The trick this year will be in making the turkey. I have made only one other turkey in my lifetime, and I am not exactly sure on how to prepare it. My mom says to just throw it in a brown paper bag with some flour and it will turn out fine. I have doubts, I think I will look through some cookbooks and see if anyone can give me some better suggestions. I am sure everything will turn out fine and everyone will be happy with their dinner.

The Cat In The Hat

Here we go, go, go on an adventure. . . . go, go, go, goooo. Two of my daughters are addicted to the new PBS show The Cat In The Hat. As an adult I really don't see what is so great about this TV program, but it seems to keep Alli and Dru entertained and contained :). I do have to say the adventures they go on are interesting and informative, however not enough to keep my attention. The jingle for the song can be quite annoying as well. Oh well, at least it's not a continuous night of Scooby Doo and Curious George.

Survivor

Right now Survivor is what my family is watching on TV. At this moment they are doing the challenge and I sure hope Marty does not win. I have not seen this season very much, but from what I can tell Marty seems to be way to sure of himself. Thankfully, Brenda just won the challenge and now Marty has a very good chance of going home tonight. I'm sure a lot of us who watch this show can only hope for that. I do have to admire those who choose to participate in this reality TV Show, as I know that I could not do it.

Clara's Baptism

This past Sunday, my niece Clara Rae, was baptised. Baptism is always such a special occassion, all children are special gifts from God. The service was extra special, as it is always so neat to see little ones baptised. The gathering after the baptism was fun also. Catching up with family and friends at special occassions like this is always a good time. I hope Clara always knows Gods love and will continue to grow in his faith as she gets old and learns his good stories.

Not Enough Room

Tonight at our local YMCA I was disappointed to see how busy the weight room was. Not only does it make it unenjoyable to workout with all the people, but it is hard to get on a machine. What made me the most upset was most of the people in the weight room were from our local college. I don't understand why the college cannot provide a facility for their students to workout at. It is very hard to share the very small weight room our YMCA offers with both the general public and the college kids.

This morning I made a quick trip to Kohls. They have been having such great sales on kids clothes lately. Because of the great sales Dru and I ran over to Mason City to buy Clara her Christmas Present. We got her a very cute outfits that she will look absolutely adorable in. Sadness At A Local Communtiy

This past week has been a very sad one for a local community. Last weekend they expectantly lost a 16 year old boy. He left home to walk to the grocery store to buy a loaf of bread for a sick neighbor. He did not return home, on the way he collapsed and died later that day. His family and friends are still waiting to hear the autopsy reports, but they are wondering if it wasn't his heart, even though he had no symptoms.

After his funeral later on in the week three of his classmates were involved in an auto accident due to the very high winds that our area has been experencing. They were pushed off the road, hit a tree, slid down the embankment, and landed in the river. One of the teenagers was able to escape, however, the other two boys were trapped in the car. I read in the paper this morning one of those boys has now passed away also. How sad. The paper has not released how the other boy is doing. I can only hope that he will be okay amist all this tragedy.

Fall Cleaning

It's that time of year again, it's the time to start doing some in depth fall cleaning. Getting rid of all the dust bunnies that have accumulated under furniture, the spider webs that just seem to appear out of no where, and just organizing all the winter clothing. I cannot believe what a job it can be and I sometimes wonder how things can get so dirty. At least when the cleaning is done I feel good about how the house looks, I just hope the kids will let me have it picked up, if even for a weekend.

Rain And More Rain

I think our beautiful fall weather we have been experiencing has finally left us and we are officially into the icky fall weather we are usually accustom to. Our Indian summer is gone. I have been wanting an electric skillet for a longtime now. With a family of six it seems like I never have a big enough frying service to make more than two grilled cheese sandwiches or more than two pancakes. Supper?

Does anyone ever have those kind of nights when making supper is the last thing you want to do. Tonight is one of those nights for me. Not only do I have too many things going on to want to stop and make it, I don't even know what to make and nothing even sounds good. I am thinking that tonight should be an easy supper like cereal and toast. That actually does sound good to me.

Last Football Game Of The Season

Last night was Cole's last football game of the season. They finished with a winning record, they did very well. Cole should be very proud of himself as he played really great this season. Last night he had such a good hit on his guy that I thought he was going to carry him across the field and down to the goal line. It's really too bad that the varsity squad didn't have as good of a season, however the JV squad will be varsity next year and will hopefull dominate. :)

Changing Colors

Autumn has arrived and the color of fall has arrived. My favorite thing about this time of year is all the beautiful colors. New Plant

Recently my grandpa passed way and where I work was kind enough to send me a plant in condolence. I have had this plant, which I do not know the name of, for about three or four weeks now. Needless to say I do not have a green thumb and unfortunately I seem to be killing off this plant. :( I water the plant even keep a watering globe in the plant, which is suppose to water as needed. Even though I am trying really hard to keep it alive the leaves just keep falling off.

Mother Hen

It is so much fun to watch Dru play with her dolls. She is such a little mother hen. It just amazes me how much little children watch their mom's and dad's and follow in their footsteps. Dru always has to rock her baby and pat her on the bottom and shushes the baby doll to console her. Then she wraps her up tight in a blanket and puts her to bed. It is so sweet to watch.

Attitude

My question to all is, do all 15 year old boys come with such attitudes. I have a feeling that the "I know it all attitude" is not just Coles but a majority of the teenage population. Being a mother of four children I think I am in for a long journey. Why is it that they always have to learn their lessons the hard way instead of listening to their parents who have probably made similar mistakes. We all want whats best for our children and I can only hope that we are doing a good enough job that he will grow to be a very great young man.

Beautiful Weather

These past few days the weather has been absolutely wonderful. We have been having almost perfect weather, no humidity, no wind, and great temperatures. This trend is suppose to continue through the weekend. Now that October is just a few days away it means that the really cold temps are on the way and that is what I am really dreading. I guess I better enjoy this perfect weather while it's here, because it could be a very long time before we see this type of weather again. Spring hurry and get here.

Rain

Right now outside it is down pouring rain. I feel really bad for my son Cole who is plaing in a Friday night football game. Not only are they playing in the rain but it is not going in their favor, losing in the second quarter 7 - 21. UGH!

Dog Sitting

This past week my family and I have been dog sitting Sam Henry. Sam Henry is my parents dog. It's not that he is a bad dog, he is just not used to a lot of activity, especially with my four children. By the end of the day he is just plain ready for bed. Right now he is hiding behind the couch, hoping Dru will not find him. All Dru wants to do is love him up, however all Sam wants is to be left alone. I think he will be very happy to go home tomorrow and Dru will be very sad to see him go.

Ellipticals

Recently I made a goal for myself to get healthier. Not only do I want to lose weight, but I would also like to get into shape. For the past two weeks now I have been going to our local YMCA and have been using their elliptical. Wow, do I really like this machine. I get a really great workout, and yes I am starting to see really great results in a short amount of time with my body also. One day last week my son had blisters forming on his neck. When I asked him what they were he couldn't give me an answer. After a couple days and no improvement in the rash/blisters on his neck we decided to take him to the doctor. At this appointment it was diagnosed that he had shingles. How odd for a 15 year old to have a break out of this. This is very contagious to those who have not had the chicken pox. Why does this matter to us you may ask? Well as it turns out we have a two year old daughter who has not had chicken pox yet. (we do not vaccinate) So I guess we will see in a couple of weeks if she will get the chicken pox for Cole who has Shingles.

Stormy Weather

Wow, we are getting some really heavy down pouring rain right now. it is so dark outside that it looks like it could be the middle of the night and it's only 6:23. The news is saying to watch out for flash flooding. This can only mean that we are going to continue to get really heavy rain. I hope the winds don't pick up and get stronger, that always means some type of damage.

Volleyball

Tonight is the first volleyball game of the season. The girls on the team or very excited for tonights game. Of course we are starting the season by playing our rival team, that always makes for an exciting and stressful game. Volleyball is always taken very seriously by our girls and sometimes the games can get pretty intense. Go Indians!

Eclipse

John and I went to the movie Eclipse one night last week. I thought the movie was good, but not as good as the book. I guess it pretty much follows the storyline of thenbook but a lot of things were left out. I will not go into what was left out, you need to read the book to figure that out all on your own. Once you have read the book you will realize how much better it is. I can honestly say I feel this way about all the movies and books that have been released so far.

Poker Games

I don't know much about gambling and all the different poker games that come with visiting different kinds of casinos. Whether we are talking about the big casinos of Las Vegas or Atlantic City or simply local casinos like Diamond Joes it looks like the guest sitting at the tables are usually having a lot of fun. My idea of fun in a casino is playing the slot machines, these I totally understand.

A few years back I was lucky enough to visit Las Vegas and had a lot of fun visiting all the different casinos this fabulous city has to offer. The casinos are all pretty much set up the same, however the themes of each hotel/casino was different. It was very fun to deposit a little bit of money at each place we visited.

Playdough

Dru, my two year old daughter, has been playing with Playdough for the last 20 minutes. Now you must know Dru in order to full appreciate that Playdough has kept her entertained for this long. She is such a busy body that nothing holds her attention for very long. She has been making all kinds of neat things with her Playdough. Her favorite thing to do is being able to make impressions of a fish and bird in the lid of the Playdough. Even though it is messy and gets into everything it is worth it since it is keeping her entertained.

Very Tired

My daughter Alli came home from school very tired today. I believe it is a combination of the very hot and humid weather and how busy they keep her. Alli is 13 and has been diagnosed with Autism. She loves to go to school every day and loves seeing all her friends. About two hours ago she fell asleep on the living room floor and is still laying there sleeping. This is very unusual for Alli to sleep through supper. Alli is the type of child who can eat 24/7 and never get filled up, however tonight her sleepiness has won out.

Fingernail Polish

My daughter Becca is driving me crazy with her new favorite hobby, painting her fingernails and her toenails. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, however her two year old sister feels the need to do the same things as Becca. I now have to worry about where this fingernail polish is going to end up. On the sofa, table, clothes, or any other household item. Needless to say it is no fun finding spots of fingernail polish through out the house.

Night Training

My daughter Dru has been potty trained since she was 18 months old. i guess I should say she is potty trained during the day, however night time is a hole other story. I still put diapers on her at night because she still wets the bed. I have tried to restrict how much she drinks at night, this seems to be working except for last night. She has been doing really well this week and I hope she continues on this trend.

Sweet Corn

In just a little while it will be time to freeze the sweet corn that it is piled high on my deck. Last night, in the hot and humid weather, my husband was nice enough to pick a large load of sweet corn. My Uncle Alan was nice enough to give me a very easy recipe, which does not include boiling the corn or blanching it. The more simple the better for me. The recipe is to cut the corn off the cob, enough to fill a 9 x 13 pan, add 1/3 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp salt, 2 cups water, and 5 ice cubs.

Thunder

Just a few minutes ago there was a large clash of thunder overhead, the kind that makes you jump out of your chair. Not only did it scare my two year old daughter, but it also scared Becca my 10 year old daughter. We were sitting here ejoying TV when all of a sudden there was the large clash of thunder. I suppose this means we are going to get the storms they have been prediciting all week long.

Hair Cut

Becca had a very fun weekend with grandpa and grandma. She was invited to go up north to their cabin. Not only did she have fun swimming, boating, and hanging out with family she also came home with a new, shorter haircut. It looks so cute on her, however, because it is a lot shorter it is starting to curl, which Becca does not want to have happen. All her sisters and brothers have curly hair and I think she likes being different from the rest.

Football

Tonight Cole is again at football. I feel bad for him and his teammates as the weather is so hot and humid. I am very surprised that no one has suffered from heat exhaustion or heat stroke. This summer has been very humid and I am ready for the cooler temperatures, but not winter. I wonder how tired and how hungary he is going to be when he gets home.

Storms

Looking outside I am trying to decide if the weather is going to change from sunny skys to stormy. It just came across the TV that we are under a tornado watch until 8:00 tonight. This will put a major wrench in my plans for tonight. First of all I was hoping to get a two mile walk in and we need to start freezing sweet corn. I hope the rain and storms stay away tonight.

Boating

Cole just left a little while ago to go boating with his friends. On a night like tonight it will feel good to get in the water. It has been very humid all day and the water is going to feel great. When I asked Cole why they were going so late I was told that there was no wind so it was a good night to use the wafe board. I sure hope he stays safe and has a really good time with Dylan, Peyton, and Dale. I'm sure some girl watching is also going to be involved in tonights boat ride.

Dog Sitting

For the past eight days my family and I have been dog sitting for my parents, who have been vacationing in Canada. I sure hope they have had a good time and are looking forward to getting home to their precious Sam Henry. Dog sitting Sam is not a bad thing, however, he is one dog who is set in his ways. I can tell he is missing mom and dad. I think our houseful of kids, the noise, and the business of this household is definitely not for this dog. I can tell you right now that I will not miss all the hair that he sheads, especially in this heat and humidity. I think all parties involved are looking forward to things getting back to normal.

Friday Nights

I, like most people I know, look forward to friday nights. Not only does it mean the weekend has finally arrived, but it is also the end of the work week. When friday night finally arrives, I envision in my mind a quiet peaceful night in which I can relax and enjoy the night, however tonight Becca is having a friend over to play and they are so not following the rules. I don not like ball throwing in the house, mouthing off, or making a large mess. I can honestly say that all of these have occurd tonight. So needless to say, I am not and will not get my quiet friday night.

Basketball Camp

Wow, I can't believe that summer is almost coming to a close and that school will be starting soon. However, before we can start football and school it is time for Waldorf's Basketball camp. Cole will start open gym tonight to help him prepare for his first basketball camp as a high school basketball player. I am so excited for him, after all, this is what all the work as a young child has been for, right? The opportunity to play the sports you love at the varsity or JV level, depending on age and ability. I am hoping he will look beyond all the hard work and enjoy playing the game with all his friends and the excitment of the crowd cheering them all on.

Toddler Talk

Listening to my two year old daughter just puts a smile on my face. Sometimes we can understand her perfectly and in the next moment she is talking so fast that we just cannot understand anything that came out of her mouth. She walks around talking to her babies just like she is a little mother hen, calling them honey and telling them how much she loves them. Sometimes I think how she pronounces certain words should be put in the dictionary as they sound so much cuter her way.

Reality Television is a bit addicting to me. There are a multitude of kinds of this sort of tv. Everything from dating shows featuring hot messes to shows about cleaning up messes, there's something for everyone. Although, i am a fan of some of the completely depraved, more often than not, scripted "reality dating shows", my favorite type of reality show is the type that is a little more genuine. I love reality shows that feature everyday people, with maybe a surprise thrown in to make their lives better. Examples of this type of show are ABC's "Wife Swap", A&E's Obsessed, and NBC's "Losing It With Jillian".

My favorite reality show has to be "Losing It With Jillian". I eagerly await each week to catch new episodes, on direct tb in Florida. In this show, Trainer, Jillian Michaels, of "Biggest Loser" fame, travels across country surprising unsuspecting families with her presence, and a stay in their homes for a week. During this week, she teaches overweight families how to exercise and eat properly. She not only deals with each family's health, she digs deep to find the underlying cause of their weight gain, and self-sabotage. This is major life change, and often the struggle is immense, and the results are truly rewarding.

In all, reality television is really fun and a great way to pass time if you're bored and there's nothing on. But, my favorite shows are the ones that truly push everyday people to triumph and become better. I always hope that some of the inspiration and insight will rub off on me.

Beautiful Weather

The last two days we have finally had some very beautiful weather. The sun has been shining and the temps have been perfect. It was actually very tolerable at Becca's softball game. We didn't melt while we watched Becca play it was very enjoyable, the girls even played a little longer because of the very perfect weather. Another plus was no bitting bugs. . that can ruin any kind of nice weather.

Birthday Parties

This weekend we are celebrating Alli's 13th Birthday and Logan's 2nd birthdy. It is going to be a really great time, the whole family will be home and we are planning on spending the whole day together. We are planning on grilling and hanging out outside and hopefully enjoying the nice, warm weather. It will be so much fun watching the cousins having fun playing together. Bring on the sun!

Grey's Anatomy

Holy cow! We are only a third of the way through tonights show and I think 5 people have been shot and 4 of those killed. If the producers, writers, and directors wanted a cliff hanger and nail biter they sure gave us one. Talk about intense. I am having a really hard time writing this and watching the show at the same time. Every single person in my home is glued to the TV at this moment.

Cosmetology School

It has been almost 20 years now since I graduated from high school. As always friends part their separate ways to pursue their own dreams in life. At that time my very best friend was Gretchin and her dream was to become a cosmetologist. She did pursue her dream and has been working in this profession for the past 18 years. I wonder if she had a school like regency, which was established in 2002, if she would have choosen to get her education here. Regency, which started as 2 schools in Minnesota, has grown to over 30 schools in nine states, is the fastest growing cosmetology school in the United States. I wonder is she would have Cosmetology school in South Carolina where her career could have taken her.

Turkey Hunting

John has been turkey hunting again this week. If it's not one type of animal it's another. You would think he would get so bored sitting out there doing nothing all evening....maybe it's the getting a way from home he enjoys. The girls and I drove out by where he is hunting and boy is it a walk to where his turkey blind is. I think its ridiculous that he will walk that far to hunt but won't go on a walk with his family. Guess it's all about priorities. Hope he gets one tonight because that means one more hunting season over with.

Long Day

It has just been one of those kind of days. Now that it is nighttime I can finally relax a little bit. Cole and Becca are spending the night with friends, that means two of four are gone for the night, so the house is a little less insane. Dru, who never likes to go to bed, actually went to bed early. It took driving around for a little while, but she is in bed sleeping. I just put Alli down too, so lets hope it stays quiet the rest of the night....mom really neeeds it.

American Idol

What do we think about American Idol this week? Who's going home? I am hoping Crystal wins this year, she is doing very well. I also think that Casey is very good this year. I believe they could both get record deals today. I am looking forward to tomorrows show. The judges are kinda goofy this year, confusing the contestants with their wants. Go Crystal and Casey.

No Bedtime

Dru, who is two years old, just does not like going to bed. It is like pulling teeth to get her to lay down. She has come out of her room at least three times tonight. Ugh! We have tried music, TV, and just going to bed, nothing seems to work. We've tried short naps, long naps, and no naps...with no success. The only thing that sorta works is letting her play outside, but getting a nice day to do that is rare. I hope her stubbornness goes away soon.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday. Today my son Cole is 15. Where does the time go? It seems like yesterday he was running around in a diaper and his mom was his favorite person in the whole world. Now it's all about friends and computer games. I have made one of his favorite meals for supper, scalloped potatoes and ham, homemade bread, chocolate birthday cake, and maybe some fresh frozen corn. Yummy. I hope he likes it. One more year until he can drive any where by himself. Boy is that scary. Love you Cole Thomas and I hope you have a great day!

Snow

The last time I can remember this much snow is back when I was a child. I always hear from people that we haven't had a good old fashion winter in a very long time. Well people, I do have to say you have gotten your wish! I think we are getting close to record numbers. I know one record just has to be that the last four Mondays we have had some type of snow storm or blizzard conditions and I have heard another storm is on the way for this Monday. Ugh! The kids have had to extend their school days by 30 minutes because they have missed so many days of school and they are still going to have to go longer than scheduled. What a winter! I am definitely ready for spring.

Orange Bowl

The Iowa Hawkeyes win the Orange Bowl 24-14 against Georgia Tech. What a great game! Friends of mine were in Miami for this game and they said it was very cold. Just the type of weather the Hawks are comfortable playing in. It was great to see Ricky Stanzi back and playing so well for Iowa! The whole team did an incredible job. Hope they have as great of a season in 2010. Looking forward to it.

No Bake Cookies

Becca thought since we are stuck home because of the weather that we should make No Bake Cookies. This is a great recipe for children who are just learning to cook or bake. It is a pretty easy recipe and is truly no bake. Becca made them all by herself and has just tasted her first one.... and they are pretty good. I think Becca will be a wonderful cook as she gets older... she is really starting to pay attention to what I do in the kitchen. I can only hope she stays interested and maybe she can start helping with some of the easier suppers:)

2 Cups Sugar
1/2 cup margerine
1/2 tsp salt
4 Tbsp Cocoa
1/2 cup milk

Place in sauce pan and heat to boiling, boil 1 minute add...

1/2 cup peanut butter
1 tsp vanilla

mix until melted then add 3 cups quick cook oatmeal then drop by spoonfuls onto waxpaper. Enjoy.
